New feature: benchmarks
by: Rob Reed | January 14, 2009, 4:58pm

Whenever you do a ranking here in the hitters and pitchers sections, PLAYERtrack will calculate the benchmark player, or the average statistics among all results in your ranking.

For the default ranking for batters (500 ABs, minimum 20 games played at a position), this is the benchmark:

149 G, 571 AB, .285 AVG, .351 OBP, 87 R, 20 HR, 82 RBI, 11 SB, 4 CS, 100 K, .391 SLG%, 0.742 OPS, 82% CONTACT, .316 BABIP (113 total batters)

For the default ranking for pitchers (150 IP), this is the benchmark:

31 starts, 190 IP, 85 ER, 12 W, 10 L, 0 SV, 0 HOLDS, 191... [read more]

TOTS Tuesday: Tale of Two Seasons #4
by: Rob Reed | January 13, 2009, 5:13pm

This week for TOTS Tuesday, I give you the easiest of the lot thus far... easiest because you will likely be able to guess the player once I tell you that we are talking a meteroic rise in the rankings from the previous season. There are only a handful of these guys, so, when I tell you it is an offensive player, I suspect that you are now thinking of five or fewer players.

It's one of those guys.

Before last year, he had only limited time in the bigs, and what he did show was terribly inconsistent.

In 2006, this player... [read more]

PLAYERtrack's MPP's for 1-5-09 to 1-12-09
by: Rob Reed | January 12, 2009, 12:02pm

The following players are the most viewed player profiles (MPP = Most Popular Players) on the PLAYERtrack site for the week starting early 1-5-09 and ending early 1-12-09.

These rankings are a general indication of players who are generating high interest among baseball fans/fantasy players as these rankings are substantially the result of search engine searches (from google, etc.) that requested information on these players.

1.Chris Iannetta (2)
2.Ryan Dempster
3.Ryan Spilborghs
4.Ryan Doumit (3)
5.Johan Santana (1)
6.Joba Chamberlain (5)
7.Chris Davis (9)
8.Matt Wieters (10)
9.Manny Ramirez (8)
10.CC Sabathia (7)

Numbers in parantheses are the rankings from last week.

Pitching ranking improvements
by: Rob Reed | January 11, 2009, 3:48pm

I have added the ability to reverse rank ERA, FIP, BABIP, WHIP... and, I added the K/BB (and reverse rank) function.

Now, you can do some fun stuff to search for SP gems...

For instance, I just did a rank using these search fields: ERA- (reverse ranking, highest to lowest), FIP (lowest to highest), K/9 (high to low), and WHIP. This was the Top 10 that was generated... [read more]

Raw stats vs. prorated stats searches now available!
by: Rob Reed | January 9, 2009, 11:08pm

A complaint that I have received about these rankings is that, for offensive players, the rankings are all prorated. So, if the "at bats" field is limited enough, you get some strange results (e.g., for 2008, Nelson Cruz appears as the #3 player in all of baseball, using the prorated stat function, and a minimum of 0 ABs).

So, for the naysayers, I have added an option to view how every player stacks up against each other solely using RAW stats.

An interesting thing happens now, though, Under the RAW stats, David Wright was the #1 player in all of fantasy... [read more]

New offensive statistic additions today... CR%- and AVG-
by: Rob Reed | January 8, 2009, 3:52pm

I have now added the capability to reverse search contact rate and batting average. This creates the following stat search scenarios that I think are VERY valuable for your fantasy analysis:

---

CR% + BABIP- (low to high) + AVG- (low to high) = find players who made a lot of contact with the ball but who suffered from bad luck, meaning they might be good options for increased AVG next year

CR% + BABIP- (low to high) + AVG = find players who did well in AVG, but who could do even better next year with some increased luck

CR%- (low to... [read more]
