Comments on: 2009 Unlucky Hitters
by: Rob Reed | December 8, 2009, 5:14pm (edited Dec 31, 2009 to correct teams)

The following players had the worst luck among all hitters in 2009 and should see a nice uptick in their batting averages and fantasy value in 2010. Minimum 100 ABs. PLAYERtrack ranking of contact rate, worst to first average, and worst to first BABIP.

1. Luis Rodriguez, CLE, AL

208 AB, .202 AVG, .322 OBP, 18 R, 2 HR, 104.0 AB/HR, 16 RBI, 1 SB, 0 CS, 1.00 SB%, 23 K, 37 BB, .622 K/BB, .260 SLG%, 0.582 OPS, 88% CR%, .219 BABIP, .058 ISO (801)

2. Eric Byrnes, ARZ, NL

239 AB, .226 AVG, .263 OBP, 26 R, 8 HR, 29.500 AB/HR, 31 RBI, 9 SB, 3 CS, .750 SB%, 30 K, 12 BB, 2.00 K/BB, .393 SLG%, 0.656 OPS, 87% CR%, .229 BABIP, .167 ISO (772)

Solid sleeper bet here, again. Just has to stay healthy. And, he has to get playing time.

3. Brian Schneider, PHI, NL

170 AB, .218 AVG, .293 OBP, 11 R, 3 HR, 56.667 AB/HR, 24 RBI, 0 SB, 0 CS, .00 SB%, 21 K, 18 BB, 1.00 K/BB, .335 SLG%, 0.628 OPS, 87% CR%, .233 BABIP, .118 ISO (769)

4. Jimmy Rollins, PHI, NL

672 AB, .250 AVG, .296 OBP, 100 R, 21 HR, 32.0 AB/HR, 77 RBI, 31 SB, 8 CS, .795 SB%, 70 K, 44 BB, 1.00 K/BB, .423 SLG%, 0.719 OPS, 89% CR%, .253 BABIP, .173 ISO (769)

There are thousands of angry 2009 Rollins owners who will want nothing to do with their first round pick in 2010. Their loss is your gain.

5. Kenji Johjima, SEA, AL

239 AB, .247 AVG, .283 OBP, 24 R, 9 HR, 26.556 AB/HR, 22 RBI, 2 SB, 2 CS, .500 SB%, 28 K, 12 BB, 2.333 K/BB, .406 SLG%, 0.689 OPS, 88% CR%, .248 BABIP, .159 ISO (768)

This is the SECOND year in a row that he appears here. His average BABIP in the last two years is about .240. If it happens a third time, then he is purposely trying to sabotage his career. :) Solid sleeper catcher, again, notwithstanding the fact that he disappointed many last year and the year before.

6. Aaron Miles, OAK, AL

157 AB, .185 AVG, .224 OBP, 17 R, 0 HR, .00 AB/HR, 5 RBI, 3 SB, 0 CS, 1.00 SB%, 21 K, 8 BB, 2.500 K/BB, .242 SLG%, 0.466 OPS, 86% CR%, .213 BABIP, .057 ISO (768)

7. Yuniesky Betancourt, SEA, AL

470 AB, .245 AVG, .277 OBP, 40 R, 6 HR, 78.333 AB/HR, 49 RBI, 3 SB, 3 CS, .500 SB%, 44 K, 21 BB, 2.524 K/BB, .351 SLG%, 0.628 OPS, 90% CR%, .260 BABIP, .106 ISO (766)

Solid AL-only sleeper. Betting he hits at least .275 in 2010.

8. Brian Giles , SD, NL

225 AB, .191 AVG, .275 OBP, 18 R, 2 HR, 112.00 AB/HR, 23 RBI, 1 SB, 0 CS, 1.00 SB%, 31 K, 26 BB, 1.00 K/BB, .271 SLG%, 0.546 OPS, 86% CR%, .214 BABIP, .080 ISO (759)

Hampered by injury and bad luck. Problem is that he is also hampered by older age... word is that the Phillies are looking at him. Unless he gets a starting gig, he shouldn't even be considered in NL only leagues, notwithstanding that his average should have been in the .280s.

9. Coco Crisp, OAK, AL

180 AB, .228 AVG, .335 OBP, 30 R, 3 HR, 60.0 AB/HR, 14 RBI, 13 SB, 2 CS, .867 SB%, 23 K, 29 BB, .793 K/BB, .378 SLG%, 0.713 OPS, 87% CR%, .247 BABIP, .150 ISO (754)

Season ending surgery in June curtailed the season. .270+ average and SBs are all she wrote here.

10. Dioner Navarro, TAM, AL

376 AB, .218 AVG, .254 OBP, 38 R, 8 HR, 47.0 AB/HR, 32 RBI, 5 SB, 2 CS, .714 SB%, 51 K, 18 BB, 2.333 K/BB, .322 SLG%, 0.576 OPS, 86% CR%, .233 BABIP, .104 ISO (750)

Disappointed many a fantasy owner last year. Slim position. Begrudgingly bid on him in the latter part of an auction draft, throw out a comment like "well, we have to have a catcher, don't we," and smile when you get him cheap.
