If you listen to the 2B PLAYERtrack podcast that I did a few weeks ago, you'll hear me buying into the general vgiew that 2B is slim, and then changing my mind later. You are absolutely right that SS is slim this year, and based upon the keepers you have listed, I don't think Rollins at #7 is a bad pick. You would have to hope that he gets 20+ HR power back, which I think is very possible. Cano and Lopez are absolutely good options later in the draft... in addition to other folks like Mike Aviles. Dependent upon where your draft is, I would monitor Utley in the spring games. If he is (1) playing and (2) doing well, showing few ill effects from the hip surgery, I think my decision would be Utley.

Message #3 by Brian Ramos @ February 24, 2009, 10:25am Utley vs Rollins Where I draft (#7 in a keeper league), the top two shortstops will be gone & S. Drew, D. Pedroia, I. Kinsler, Alexei Ramirez, B. Phillips, and possibly even D. Uggla will all be kept. Which should I draft at that point, Utley or Rollins? I will pass on 1B/3B at this point (Braun, Longoria, Fielder will be kept) because I have C. Davis as a keeper (costing me a last pick in the draft) and I think I can grab a L. Berkman or Morneau in the next round or so. Both 2B and SS seem like thin positions, but there may be more value at 2B later than at SS (i.e. R. Cano who should bounce back & J. Lopez). What do you think?

Message #2 by Rob Reed @ February 8, 2009, 08:26pm With the hip surgery, is he still a first rounder? For now, I am assuming yes. Utley's goal is still to start the season. So, I'll side with his work ethic. I can keep Chase for $25 this season in my money league. I'm assuming 500 ABs, and as far as I am concerned, $25 is a steal for this many ABs (which I believe he would get even if he misses all of April). The batting average dropped substantially in 2008, but his career BABIP and contact rate indicate a return to plus-.300 levels. The hip probably had a lot to do with his power troubles at the plate in the second half (only 8 HRs post-AS break).

Message #1 by Rob Reed @ 1/31/06, 11:08am The Real Deal This guy is the real deal, as Gregg Keer and I discussed in the 1/22/06 BaseballGeeks.com Podcast. The only caveat I can throw out is that his batting average and on base numbers in 2004 might be a cause for concern. Power numbers are and will be solid this year. If he can, again, have solid BA and OBP numbers, then Utley will be the real deal for quite a few years to come.
