I am thinking of drafting either Aviles (pretty much named the starter in Boston at SS), J. Lowrie or M. Scutaro as my backup SS. The league as a deep bench and I currently have Hanley (SS), B. Phillips (2B) and Jemile Weeks (MI). I think any of those late round SS are worth the flyer and I especially like Aviles who hit well in Boston after the trade and has 15/15 potential. I also like Scutaro hitting 2nd in front of Tulo, Cargo and Cuddyer. Thoughts?

Lots of potential and lots of upside... injury and bad luck curtailed a potential great year last year... and, now, the issue is playing time. Can't see Mike gets enough of it, unless he gets traded.

You asked in the Zobrist thread whether I still liked Aviles... a resounding yes. I have no doubts that Aviles will hit at least between .290-.300. You didn't get Aviles for anything but average, a few SBs, and some runs... he'll come around.

I have gotten him in the 14th and 15th rounds in a number of drafts... if you miss out on him, Khalil is a decent, low cost optio who will go later.
No need for desperation in a multi-league... I just finished an NL only... now THERE was plenty of need for desperation there. Eek.

What round would you draft him? I am in a keeper league and every major SS is gone. He is still there but we are only in the 7th round with only Tejada ahead of him in the rankings. I don't have any SS, but I do have Utley (2B slot) and Cano (MI slot). For this league many of the major top 100 players are gone which makes it such that many players go much earlier than in normal drafts. I am also thinking that K. Greene could be had late and could produce nice power numbers (looks great thus far this spring). Am I wrong? Should I just draft Aviles soon rather than lose him?

2B/SS is a slim position, so Aviles is an attractive option. But, most folks are aware of him after a great 419 AB season.
He isn't a .320 hitter over the long haul, and he just finished his Rule of 27 year, which could mean we have seen the best he has to offer.
Decent speed and pop means we are potentially looking at a 15-15 player... and at the 2B/SS position in 2009, these are great stats.
I would expect .290-.295, 14-17 HR, 70-75 RBI, 10-13 SBs, 75-80 R.
