The major issue will be playing time and injury... if can get in the lineup and, say, bat behind Matt Holliday, he could be a nice surprise. Surgery to his shoulder cut his 2008 short, and he was replaced by Jack Hannahan. Fortunately, for Eric, Hannahan didn't do much to convince the A's brass that he should start over Chavez. Chavez just turned 31, so he is still fairly young... his contract doesn't expire until 2010 (with 2011 option that you figure the A's will not exercise unless Eric REALLY tears it up this year). Perhaps, that is incentive enough for him to play extremely well in '09? Maybe. As for me... I'm going to wait on a potential waiver wire pickup if my 3B/CI /DH slot is weak in my money league... with only 10 teams, I don't think Eric will warrant taking a spot from anyone else at the draft.
