Comments on: Thanks and a Pat Chawki follow-up
by: Rob Reed | October 8, 2009, 12:03pm

Congrats to all on another fantasy baseball year completed. Congrats to Roger L. (MJM Heater) from Australia for winning the Inaugural PlayerTrack money league. He is the proud winner of $100, and the pride of beating a bunch of Americans who think they know the game of baseball.

The end of season update should be completed in the next few weeks, and you will be able to buy a new membership for the next season at that time. It will also be at that time that I will shift into high gear to prepare you for the 2010 season draft.

Follow-up on Pat Chawki:

I received this in email this morning... on behalf of the PLAYERtrack users, I donated $105 to the Good Girls Give fund last April (link):

Story of High School Baseball Star Given Up for Dead Featured on ESPN’s E:60

ESPN's award-winning primetime newsmagazine E:60 will tell the incredible story of former Los Angeles-area high school baseball star Pat Chawki, thought by many of his former classmates to be dead, in the episode airing Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. ET. The program, which launched in October 2007, combines investigative reporting, in-depth profiles of intriguing sports personalities and features on emerging star athletes. These stories are presented in a fresh and innovative format that incorporates producer/correspondent meetings.

In 1986, Grant High of Van Nuys, Calif., won the City 4-A baseball championship in a game played at Dodger Stadium. One of the stars of the game was senior right fielder Pat Chawki, whose arm and speed helped Grant win its first city title. Twenty years later, members of the team and the Class of ’86 came together for a reunion and were told that Chawki had died. But when former classmate Laurie Green send a condolence to Chawki’s sister, she learned that Chawki was very much alive, but was stricken with locked-in syndrome, a rare disorder that rendered him fully cognitive, but unable to speak, move or eat. He had been that way for nine years and was in a nursing home, nearly forgotten. E:60’s Chris Connelly reports that Green went into action, visiting Chawki and spreading the word to old friends that he was alive. She went on to organize fundraisers for Chawlki’s therapy and to raise awareness of the condition, and this summer it culminated with a return to Dodger Stadium by Chawki and his old teammates. He was able to see his children throw out the first pitch.

A preview clip of the Pat Chawki feature can be viewed here.
