I am not a big fan of the "projections" from mockdraftcentral.com because they give one the opportunity for false bravado. They don't mean assured success.
But, I can't help but present this projection, as it was my first mock draft using PLAYERtrack's overall ranking draft tool.

I went in with a strategy of making my next pick one of the top 10 available players on my overall listing (unless I had filled the positions already).
This was an ESPN-style draft, ten teams, with one catcher, three reserves, and 25 rounds. I had the second pick.
---
Some of my thoughts:
(1) I still need to print out a sheet of slated closers. I was frantically checking some depth charts to make sure.
And, you'll need to pull the plug on closers before they will appear in the top of the draft lists... so, keep this in mind. Closers, generally, will fall fairly far in the overall rankings here and can get overlooked by the system.
I first picked Brian Fuentes (I did a pitcher ranking to determine the highest available closer and he topped the list). It was the 11th round. I ended up with Fuentes, Brian Wilson (16th), and Trevor Hoffman (19th). Each were the top available closers in the pitching ranks.
The same applies with catchers, but I like to hold out until at least the 15th round for a catcher...
(2) I went off the rankings as soon as the 3rd round... Jose Reyes was there, and I wanted to secure SBs with my third pick.
(3) I noticed that there were some old schoolers filling the list, and I wanted to focus more on youth, so I converted my overall search from 2005-2009 to 2007-2009 midway through the draft.
(4) Johnny Damon ranks higher than Nick Markakis, but I pulled the plug on Markakis in the 5th round because of youth... only to find Damon still available in the 6th round, so I took him there.
(4) Francisco Liriano and Brandon Webb appear farther down in the ranks, but I brought them up a little earlier. Folks are forgetting about these two. I got Liriano in the 17th and Webb in the 15th!
(5) A lot of pitchers ended up in the top 10 that I ended up ignoring (even though I had some pitching spots available)... in particular, some relievers and a surprisingly undrafted J.A. Happ.
---
With my first draft ending with a #1 projection, I'm left pretty happy with my efforts in getting this overall system fully off of the ground. :)
My final squad (round):
C A.J. Pierzynski (18) 1B Derrek Lee (8) 2B Dustin Pedroia (4) SS Hanley Ramirez (1) 3B Jorge Cantu (12) MI Jose Reyes (3) CI Casey Blake (22) OF Nick Markakis (5) OF Johnny Damon (6) OF Torii Hunter (7) OF Hunter Pence (9) OF Alex Rios (13) UT Magglio Ordonez (20) P Chris Carpenter (2) P Jake Peavy (10) P Brian Fuentes (11) P Ted Lilly (14) P Brandon Webb (15) P Brian Wilson (16) P Francisco Liriano (17) P Trevor Hoffman (19) P Rich Harden (21) BN Marlon Byrd (23) BN Mark DeRosa (24) BN Aubrey Huff (25) |
