TOTS Tuesday: Tale of Two Seasons #2
by: Rob Reed | December 30, 2008, 12:08am

Happy New Year! The "Tale of Two Seasons" column will occur every Tuesday, where I will look at two straight seasons of a player's stats, and you guess who I am talking about...

In this week's Tale of Two Seasons, I focus on a 2008 stud rather than the goat that was Aaron Rowand in 2008.

In 2007, this TOT had a major crash and burn to his batting average -- a full 6.3% drop (.270, from .333). He had a power drop of 6 HRs and 1 RBI from 2006 to 2007, although he had 82 more ABs in... [read more]

Tale of Two Seasons (T.O.T.S.) #1
by: Rob Reed | December 27, 2008, 6:39pm

Welcome to the Tale of Two Seasons column, where I'll post a particular player's notable statistics from two different seasons, generally focusing on a notable improvement or crash. In the name of brevity, I'll be referring to these fellows as "TOTs."

Our first TOT pulled an "Adrian Beltre" in 2007, where he broke through the ranks of fantasy obscurity by conveniently tearing it up in a walk-off year. Then, he came back to return to fantasy disappointment.

After his 2007 breakout season, this TOT ended up signing a 5-year, $60 million dollar contract. His new team, obviously, was impressed by... [read more]

The value of the BABIP stat
by: Rob Reed | December 20, 2008, 3:51pm

The popularity of the BABIP (batting average on balls in play) statistic in the last year has been pretty substantial, evidenced by a simple google search. Consider me one of the folks who recently discovered its value.

Today, I have edited the PLAYERtrack ranking system to allow you to search BABIP+ (highest BABIP to lowest) and the reverse (BABIP-).

In doing some test searches, I discovered that my fantasy philosophy has evolved quite a bit in the positive direction because of basic sabermetrics. In particular, I'm going to focus on Melvin Mora to provide an example.

In 2005, when I first made... [read more]

2008 Top 5 starters ERA and FIP, minimum 100 IP
by: Rob Reed | December 17, 2008, 3:52pm

Now that the FIP statistic is available here at PLAYERtrack, I decided to do a search of the top 5 pitchers in ERA and FIP, which -- if the FIP statistic is worth its weight in gold -- should predict pitchers who fared well in 2008 who should also fare well in 2009.

Presenting the top 5, starters, minimum 100 IP:

1) Cliff Lee: In 2008, he ranks 3rd in ERA (2.54) and 3rd in FIP (2.83), making him the #1 pitcher in all of baseball looking at these two categories solely.

In Cliff, we have a strange beast.

In 2005, Cliff was the 27th... [read more]

FIP added!
by: Rob Reed | December 16, 2008, 1:46pm

I have added the category of "Fielding Independent Pitching," which is an estimator of an actual ERA without considering defensive factors and focusing only on pitching.

Here's an article on the formula we use here: http://www.ehow.com
/how_2288361_calculate-fip-statistic.html

The formula was created by Tom Tango at tangotiger.net, and is detailed in his book that is sold on that site.

In truth, to me, the formula seems very arbitrary. For instance, why multiply homers by 13? Why add 3.20? I have no clue, but I am no statistician.

So, I'm not sold on this statistic yet, but it will be interesting to analyze pitchers using... [read more]
